Ramsar Assessment Tool

The Ramsar Assessment Tool enables comprehensive analysis of wetland ecological conditions through time-series assessment of multiple abiotic, biotic, and threat indicators across Ramsar-designated sites globally.

Overview

This tool provides:

  • Data Integration: Combines satellite-derived metrics and site-specific observations
  • Temporal Analysis: Explores trends and patterns over multiple decades
  • Condition Assessment: Classifies surface water conditions and ecosystem health
  • Custom Analysis: Upload and analyze your own site data

Metrics

The tool measures ecosystem conditions across four domains:

Abiotic Indicators (Orange)

Physical water and climate characteristics:

  • Max Water Area
  • Average Water Area
  • Water km²
  • Moisture Index
  • Vegetation Index
  • Annual Precipitation
  • Annual Precipitation (HydroSHEDS Level 5)
  • Palmer Drought Severity Index (HydroSHEDS Level 5)
  • Runoff mm (HydroSHEDS Level 5)

Biotic Indicators (Green)

Vegetation and land cover composition:

  • Bare Soil
  • Dry Vegetation
  • Green Vegetation
  • Wetland
  • Water

Threat Indicators (Red)

Environmental threats and disturbances:

  • Burned Area ≥ 80%
  • Burned Area ≥ 95%

Service Indicators (Blue)

Ecosystem services (expandable for future indicators)

Surface Water Conditions Classification Matrix

Wetland conditions are classified into five categories based on standardized metrics:

Condition Class Water Status Vegetation Response Interpretation
Very Dry Minimal water Bare soil dominant Severe drought conditions; minimal ecosystem function
Dry Low water extent Limited green vegetation Water stress; reduced habitat quality
Moderate Moderate water Balanced vegetation Near-normal conditions; acceptable ecosystem state
Wet High water extent Vigorous vegetation Above-normal water; healthy conditions
Very Wet Maximum water coverage Dense green vegetation Flooding conditions; optimal ecosystem function

Getting Started

  1. Go to the Data tab to select a Ramsar site
  2. Optionally upload your own CSV data to analyze alongside Ramsar data
  3. Use the Exploration tab to visualize temporal trends
  4. Use the Assessment tab to generate formal condition assessments
  5. Export results as CSV or Word documents for reporting
