The Ramsar Assessment Tool enables comprehensive analysis of wetland ecological conditions through time-series assessment of multiple abiotic, biotic, and threat indicators across Ramsar-designated sites globally.
This tool provides:
The tool measures ecosystem conditions across four domains:
Physical water and climate characteristics:
Vegetation and land cover composition:
Environmental threats and disturbances:
Ecosystem services (expandable for future indicators)
Wetland conditions are classified into five categories based on standardized metrics:
| Condition Class | Water Status | Vegetation Response | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Very Dry | Minimal water | Bare soil dominant | Severe drought conditions; minimal ecosystem function |
| Dry | Low water extent | Limited green vegetation | Water stress; reduced habitat quality |
| Moderate | Moderate water | Balanced vegetation | Near-normal conditions; acceptable ecosystem state |
| Wet | High water extent | Vigorous vegetation | Above-normal water; healthy conditions |
| Very Wet | Maximum water coverage | Dense green vegetation | Flooding conditions; optimal ecosystem function |
